Problem
Math practice needs to do more than mark an answer right or wrong. Students need useful hints when they’re stuck, answer checks that understand mathematical notation, and a way to see their progress. Parents need a way to follow along too.
Math Mastery Academy brings those pieces into a subscription learning platform for Algebra 1 and Geometry.
What I built
I founded and built the platform, including a React practice interface and an Express API backed by PostgreSQL.
Students work through lessons with interactive number-line and coordinate-grid inputs. They can ask an AI tutor for a hint, listen to a problem read aloud, and earn XP as they practice. Levels unlock voices and interface themes through an in-app shop.
Parents can link to student accounts using family codes and view their progress. Stripe handles the subscription flow, and access to lesson content and assistance depends on the student’s tier.
Notable engineering
- Checking the math behind an answer. The answer validator normalizes Unicode notation and routes different answer types to dedicated checks. It handles expressions, inequalities, number lines, and coordinate grids, with an allowlist before evaluating supported expressions.
- Keeping hints focused on learning. The assistance controller instructs the AI tutor to suggest the next step and refuse requests to simply give the answer. Assistance usage is tracked alongside each problem attempt.
- Keeping rewards tied to practice. The experience module accounts for hints, explanation reveals, and repeated checks. A per-problem XP cap prevents repeated attempts from earning unlimited points.
- Making shop purchases transactional. The shop controller locks the student’s account row while checking ownership and level balance. It then applies the purchase in one transaction, preserving progress within the current level.
- Reading mathematical notation aloud. The math-to-speech module converts LaTeX, Unicode, and plain-text notation into spoken English. The text-to-speech controller caches generated audio to avoid repeating the same synthesis request.
